Spend three days in an intensive study on how to train your eyes to discern light in the landscape. Although this is a studio workshop, Barbara will discuss what to observe when painting outdoors from life (or simply gathering reference photos), and how to bring that knowledge into the studio. She’ll focus on how to “read” a reference photo and capture the genuine effects of various lighting situations in your studio landscape paintings, rather than duplicate a compromised photographic image. The workshop will cover a few different types of landscapes, and various light scenarios. On the first day, students will all work from instructor-provided photo reference for a specific exercise. For the remaining days, students may choose to work from their own photos or instructor-provided photos. Each day will begin with a demonstration, followed by student painting time in the afternoon during which students will receive plenty of individual guidance at their easel. This workshop is open to all levels, but those with at least some basic experience with pastels will benefit most.

About Barbara…

Barbara Courtney Jaenicke (pronounced JAN-i-kee) loved drawing and painting as a child, but it was stubborn determination more so than any natural giftedness that launched her artistic journey.

Not realizing that a career in fine art could be a possibility, she steered her college studies and initial career choice toward another art-related field, working first in advertising as an art director, then later in corporate marketing communications. In 2002, she was able to turn her focus to a fine art career, pursuing it full steam ahead.

Working in pastel and oil, Barbara strives to capture light-filled landscapes in an impressionist style. Although her finished work is painted primarily in the studio, a regular practice of painting outdoors enables her to create a genuine sense of light in her studio work.

She holds signature memberships in Oil Painters of America (OPA) and American Impressionist Society (AIS), and has earned the distinctions of Master Pastelist in the Pastel Society of America (PSA) and Eminent Pastelist in the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS). Her work has been awarded numerous times by these organizations and many others, and she has been featured in many of the top art publications including Pastel Journal, Plein Air Magazine, Fine Art Connoisseur, Artists Magazine, and Southwest Art, and has served as a contributing writer for some of these publications.

Born and raised in New Jersey, Barbara also lived in Atlanta, Georgia for many years until she yearned for snow and mountains for her landscape subject matter, which prompted her family’s move to Bend, Oregon in 2015.

Barbara is a popular workshop instructor throughout the US, teaching workshops coast to coast each year.

“Painting isn’t just a job or hobby for me. It’s a passion. Maybe even an obsession. I try to paint experiences and emotions, rather than ‘things.’ To do this, I need to push beyond the basic mechanics of creating the work. No painting is ever easy for me. Each one challenges me to create that magic that goes beyond just a painting of a thing. That magic doesn’t always happen in every single attempt, but it’s those euphoric instances when the painting 'hits' that make it worth going through all the painful 'misses.’"
