Natalie Richards’ Demo and Workshop

Oh, so inspiring!

At our January 13th general meeting, our own Natalie Richards provided a lecture and demo on how using a colored background can dramatically change a pastel painting. She showed the same scene painted on three different backgrounds; each evoking a unique mood. She then demonstrated a painting of the same scene on a fourth colored background. With a delicate touch using primarily Blue Earth pastels, Natalie created a lovely painting in 25 minutes!

After the general meeting, 12 lucky students were treated to a mini-workshop with Natalie. She had each student paint the same scene on three different small colored backgrounds of the student’s choice. Not only did the students learn about the change in mood that a colored background can provide, but also how colored backgrounds can by a tool for allowing particular colors to be used with less effort.
