WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This will be a fun and supportive workshop. We will deconstruct, interpret, and let go of our photo references through gesture, value, structural abstraction, color studies, various underpainting techniques, and mark making. We will start each day with a demonstration and a series of small studies before letting loose in the afternoon! There will be many boundaries to push, comfort zones to break out of, and plenty of individual instruction. We will end each day with a critique.
This workshop is suitable for students at all levels, from beginner to advanced. However, Laurinda recommends that beginning pastelists have prior drawing experience or painting experience in another medium.
ABOUT LAURINDA
As a pastel artist, I strive to let simplified strokes of color and line create a path into a scene and moment in time. I push myself to capture the sense I feel from the landscape as well as to create the up-close excitement of color, texture, and expression on the surface of my paper.
Laurinda Phakos O’Connor is an award-winning artist and instructor known for her expressive pastel landscapes full of directional lines, mark-making and interplay of stroke and color. She strives to create “a mood or sense of place, a space in time in which people can imagine themselves.”
Laurinda grew up in an artistic family. Both her parents were working commercial artists who encouraged her interest in drawing and painting; it was a natural decision for her to become an artist. She obtained her BFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and a MFA in Graphic Design from Boston University. After college, she worked as a graphic artist and raised a family. Laurinda discovered pastels in 2009. She was smitten with the immediacy of the medium and the vibrancy of color that pastels offered and has been painting with them ever since.
Laurinda is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, Central Mass Pastel Society, and the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod. She is a gallery artist at the Copley Society of Boston and at the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, Mass. She teaches a a master class and adult pastel classes at the South Shore Art Center and the Milton Art Center in Milton, Mass. Laurinda also teaches art to grades K-8 at St Mary of the Hills in Milton and gives workshops and demonstrations throughout the country. She has also served as a juror (selection and awards) for several national and member shows.
Laurinda is represented by the Copley Society, Da Vallia Gallery in Chester, VT, The Lakes Gallery at ChiLin, Laconia, NH, and N.W. Barrett Gallery in Portsmouth, NH.
Laurinda was a Feature Artist in the February 2021 edition of Pastel Journal Magazine.
